The purpose of this page is to provide information about Hillstown that has been forthcoming during my years of research.
The village of Hillstown did not exist until the mid 1890s. Prior to that time the area was open fields and was mostly part of the village of Palterton, though some of the eastern part of the area belonged to the village of Scarcliffe.
When first built it was named New Palterton. Subsequently its name changed to Hills Town after Rev. Thos. Charles Hills who lived at The Vicarage, Bolsover.. Later it changed to the present name Hillstown. The first three streets to be built were named after Rev. Hills children, namely Nesbitt, Selwyn, and Victoria.
There is evidence in Kelly's Trade Directory of 1895, that the location was still known as New Palterton and that Nesbitt Street was built. In that Directory, there is no mention of the other two streets, but that may have been because there was no shops or tradesmen residing therein.
I have a note, source unknown that Rev. Hills may have been referred to as Dr. Hills, but this should not be relied upon.
