Preface I have included this Samuel Richards in the page detailing Richards mysteries, so that readers can see my obstacle of the familiar "brick wall" encountered by genealogists. Samuel Richards born circa 1700 to 1716. The identity of his parents has not yet been established and in fact very little is known about him at present. 11 July 1704. However, I believe that he was baptised at Ilkeston St. Mary's parish church this date, the son of Henery Richards and his wife Rachel.
26.06.1732. He married Mary Chambers at Eastwood parish church after by Banns called. Why they married at Eastwood, we may never know, but most likely it was her place of residence at the time. 26 July 1708. On researching in the Nuthall parish church register there is evidence that on this date a Mary Chambers was baptised. 18 December 1741. There is further evidence that Mary Richards nee Chambers was buried at Ilkeston St. Mary's parish church on this date. To date the following children have been traced to this marriage.
08.07.1733. Mathew Richards baptised at Ilkeston St. Mary's. We conject he married Mary Sore.
18.12.1741. Meanwhile as stated above, the childrens mother and wife of Samuel Richards viz. Mary Richards nee Chambers died and was buried at Ilkeston St. Mary's Parish Church. The entry states "buried with affadavit". 03.10.1744. We believe that Samuel Richards married Diana Goddard at Ilkeston St. Mary's. He was a widower. No witnesses were recorded but to date the following children have been traced.
09.03.1744. John Richards died & buried at Ilkeston St. Mary's with affadavit. No baptism traced. 07.05.1766 There was a burial of a Samuel Richards at Ilkeston St. Mary's parish church and it could relate to the subject of this page. However, I do not believe so. See next entry. 27 April 1777. Samuel Richards may have died and been buried at Ilkeston St. Mary's. 1* June 1778. Diana Richards was buried at Ilkeston St. Mary's.
