This image was taken at the corner of Orchard Terrace, Palterton. A date on the back states 1912. The identity of the children
is not known and may never be known. There is documentary evidence available to show the names of children attending the village
school in 1912. Some children in this image may have been too young to have started school.

This image is of scholars at Scarcliffe school. The little board states: Violin Class 1905 - 06. At that time
there was no school in Palterton and children from the village were educated at Scarcliffe school. This
meant a journey of about two miles in either direction. The two girls holding the board are L to R -
Ruth and Elizabeth Elliott.

This is the second earliest school image discovered and dates circa 1907. The boy in the front row
(centre) with stick in hands is Fred West born in 1899. He appears to be aged about 8 years. None
of the other children has so far been identified. Palterton children are on this image. The man
front row extreme right is Mr. Yeomans, headmaster.

At present I cannot identify any of the children nor do I know if it is
Palterton or Scarcliffe school nor the year.

They may have been exercising or simply posing for the photographer.
