The Richards in the parish of Strelley

Coal had remained important to Strelley even after the upheavals of the seventeenth century. Early members of the Edge family managed the mining themselves using primitive "Bell Pit" techniques. The Bell Pit remains in the field opposite the Broad Oak public house. As deeper and more specialised mining became necessary, the mines were leased out once more. In 1738 the earliest to Messrs. Barber and Fletcher, later Barber and Walker Co. for 99 years. Lease made when the coal trade was depressed.

The first Barber and Walker mines were in Bilboro but towards the end of the eighteenth century when Robert Fletcher handed over to Francis Walker, mines in Strelley were begun and the first deep mines were sunk at Robinetts Colliery and Strelley Park Colliery.

Opening these new mines dramatically increased the population of Strelley.  Some of the extra population could be absorbed in the new houses built by Thomas Webb Edge but not all the incomers could be so accommodated and Barber Walker erected two terraces of miners cottages in Strelley Park to house their colliers.  (Notts. R.O. Ref. 90. 2F).

Some of my ancestors lived in these cottages.
